Georgette and chiffon are two common fabrics in our life. Both fabrics were originally made of silk. As textile technology developed, alternatives made of synthetic fibers emerged for both. The two fabrics are similar yet different. This makes it difficult for people to distinguish the two fabrics.
What is georgette?
The name Georgette comes from the French tailor Georgette de la Planteo in the early 20th century. It is a sheer, lightweight, matte crepe fabric. Georgette is made from high twisted yarn. The warp and weft are alternately interwoven using s-twist and z-twist yarns.
What is chiffon?
The name chiffon comes from the hair stock word chiffe which means "cloth or rag". Is a lightweight, balanced, sheer fabric. It is woven from alternating s-twist and z-twist yarns.
Georgette VS Chiffon
Both georgette and chiffon are woven from alternately s-twist and z-twist high-twist yarns. The surface style of the fabric is also similar. In the beginning, georgette and chiffon were just different names for the same fabric. But with the development of the textile industry, it has gradually developed into two different fabrics. The main differences between the two are as follows.
Twist: Both are woven from high twist yarns. But there is a certain difference in twist. Chiffon has a slightly lower twist than georgette. The twist of chiffon is usually 230Tt. The twist of georgette is usually above 250Tt, and some types can even reach 300Tt.
Density: The density of georgette is much higher than that of chiffon. This is also the main difference between the two. The difference in density leads to differences in thickness, feel, drape and other aspects between the two.
Thickness: Georgette is generally thicker than chiffon. But with the development of the textile industry, there are more and more types of chiffon. There are even some particularly thick varieties.
Handle: Georgette's handle is harder. The roughness of the surface is more obvious and the drape is better. Chiffon is softer and has no drape.
Durability: Georgette is more durable because it is thicker. Not easy to deform and split. Chiffon is much more fragile.
Smooth: Chiffon has a smoother surface than georgette. So the glossiness of the surface will be better.
Elasticity: Both have some elasticity. However, the elasticity of georgette will be better.
How to choose?
The first choice you need to make is the raw material of the fabric: silk or synthetic. When georgette and chiffon were invented, they were both woven from silk. And now the most on the market is polyester georgette and polyester chiffon. Silk is more luxurious and comfortable, and the price is very high. Synthetic fibers are less expensive and easier to care for.
Georgie and chiffon are just used differently. There is no saying which fabric is better. For a long time, people used to use chiffon to make scarves and georgette to make clothes. Because the chiffon at that time was very fragile and not suitable for making clothes. With the development of technology, the current chiffon is not as fragile as the old one. More and more used to make clothes. If you need matte texture and better drape, we recommend you to choose Georgette. If you need more shine and a light feel, we would recommend chiffon even more.
